Mapping Social Venues

Mayisha 2016 is a venue-based survey, which means that trained fieldworkers recruit participants in pre-selected venues. In order to ensure our fieldworkers recruit eligible participants, the research team undertook a social mapping exercise. The main aim was to create a database of venues that could potentially participate in Mayisha 2016. This database will also be useful in planning future work, allowing the London-wide HIV Prevention Programme to reach more African communities.

Area Selection

Data from the 2011 census were used to identify areas with high proportions/numbers of black African census respondents. Six London boroughs (Southwark, Newham, Lambeth, Greenwich, Lewisham and Barking & Dagenham) with either the highest number or highest proportion of black African men and women living there were automatically included in the mapping exercise.

The 14 other boroughs in the top 20 were then sorted alphabetically and assigned a number 1 – 14. The RANDBETWEEN function in Microsoft excel was used to randomly generate 4 numbers and those local authorities were included in the mapping exercise: Barnet; Wandsworth; Merton; Hackney

This exercise was then repeated with ward level data. Only wards from the selected boroughs were included. The top 5 wards and then a random selection from the next 20 most populous wards.
